Torres Strait Healthy Young Women’s Project

This project aims to facilitate the co-design of a healthy lifestyle program for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the Torres Strait. The researcher will assist in the identification of barriers and enablers for the young women to be healthy and work with key stakeholders and young women to design a sustainable program(s) to address in-activity and weight gain for young Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander women.

The program also has scope to include other areas of health promotion that are found to be important to the young women which may include but is not limited to; not taking up, or quitting smoking, healthy eating, alcohol and healthy relationships (including safe sex).

Through physical activity the program anticipates to have improvements in metabolic health indicators evident through the young persons’ health screenings as well as a positive impact on social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) including community connectedness amongst participants.
